LC Chatspace

A GROUP of Huddersfield residents have got together to create their own space to chat – and get to know one another better.

“LC Chatspace” is meeting on Friday mornings from 9am to noon, at Longley and Lowerhouses Community Church.

And they have been showing off their creative talents over the last two sessions and producing some beautiful silk paintings with the help of Missioner Carole Pattenden.

So how did LC Chatspace come about?

“Local mums were telling us that although they saw each other at the school gates in the mornings and afternoons, there was nowhere in the community that they could get together and really get to know one another,” said HBF Missioner Colin Pattenden. “So, we opened up one of the rooms at the church and about a dozen people turned up and were really enthusiastic about setting up a kind of community drop-in. They came up with the name LC Chatspace.

“Together they recognise there are others such as elderly folk and people who live alone who would benefit from a place to go. The church already has youth groups, a luncheon club and a toddler group meeting on the premises. But there was a clear need for a friendly space that brings people together of all ages and backgrounds, especially at a time when other services are being cut.

“Older people, for example, have knowledge and skills that younger people can benefit from – we have a lot to learn from one another. A number of people have expressed interest in crafts and in time we hope to offer advice on budgeting, nutrition, help with filling in forms, amongst other things."

One of the new group's first activities was planning and organising a ‘New to You’ Sale of children’s and babies’ clothing, toys and equipment.
